In line with the 2023 iSpark Assembly theme of Breaking Imaginary Boundaries, iSparkians had the rare opportunity to hear from three entrepreneurs during the Assembly session on 18 Aug 2023. While previous speakers included our very own Brandon Pok (4i4) who prepared for the Youth Olympics by taking a gap year, as well as alumnus Juan Foo, the producer of Singapore’s first monster genre movie, this session was headlined by Ms Val Yap who shared with the audience via Zoom from the USA, where she is currently based.
Being the founder of PolicyPal, an InsurTech startup that addresses pain points faced by policyholders, as well as the author of “Balls Inc”, which is a book that shares her entrepreneurial journey and also aims to dismantle the unconscious social bias against women in the tech industry, Ms Yap shared nuggets of wisdom with members of the audience keen to succeed as an entrepreneur, as well as students who could identify with growing-up struggles and limitations that she faced.
The other speakers, Rick Wong and Ng Jun Wei, co-founders of Kapybara Tech and also Hwa Chong alumni, shared about how their education journey in Hwa Chong developed in them their entrepreneurial dare, and encouraged iSparkians to diversify their experiences and grasp the opportunities that come their way.
