At Hwa Chong Institution, we believe that for our students to become lifelong learners, our teachers must first lead the way. Professional learning at HCI is not a series of isolated workshops, but a dynamic and purposeful culture where educators continually learn, collaborate, and grow.
Guided by the spirit of 自强不息, a tireless pursuit of self-improvement, our approach to professional learning is both intentional and forward-looking. It reflects our belief that growth is ongoing and shared, and that our collective efforts across the school play an important role in nurturing confident, future-ready learners.

A Whole-School Approach to Teacher Growth
Over the past year, HCI has strengthened its identity as a Professional Learning Community. Teachers work in small Professional Learning Teams (PLTs), where they come together regularly to reflect on their teaching and improve student learning.
In these teams, teachers:
Identify areas to better support students’ academic, social, emotional, and personal development
Design and implement approaches that strengthen both learning experiences and student growth
Reflect on outcomes and refine their practices through ongoing cycles of inquiry
This sustained, year-long process ensures that our practices continue to evolve thoughtfully and purposefully, in ways that better support student growth.

PLAY@HCI: A Celebration of Learning and Community
One of the highlights of our professional learning journey is PLAY@HCI, a dedicated day where all staff come together to learn from one another and celebrate their shared commitment to education.
A key feature of this year’s event was the integration of the Best Teaching Practice Award Finals, where innovative teaching ideas were showcased to the entire school community. Staff also participated in the Marketplace of Ideas, where colleagues presented their work through poster presentations, showcasing both completed projects and ongoing initiatives. These platforms highlight an important belief: meaningful growth often comes from trying, refining, and learning together.

A Whole-School Effort
Professional learning at HCI extends beyond teachers. Our Executive and Administrative Staff (EAS) also participated in sessions to strengthen skills such as communication, technology use, and adapting to new workplace demands. We also welcomed colleagues from other schools from the W4 Cluster to join selected workshops, reflecting our commitment to contributing to the wider educational community.

Building Connections Beyond the Classroom
We recognise that strong schools are built on strong relationships. Beyond formal sessions, PLAY@HCI included a range of activities that allowed staff to connect through shared experiences, from learning journeys to organisations such as Apple and Hyundai, to creative workshops, sports, and community service initiatives.
These experiences reinforce an important idea: professional growth is not just about gaining knowledge, but also about building connections, exploring new perspectives, and learning with others.

Conclusion
At Hwa Chong, we remain committed to creating a culture where every educator continues to grow. By investing in our teachers, we ensure that our students benefit from engaging, thoughtful, and forward-looking learning experiences.
