Tensions were high in the Singapore Sports Hub on 25th April during the long-awaited Track and Field Finals. Multiple schools from across the country, including track powerhouses Raffles Institution, Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) and our very own Hwa Chong Institution came together to compete for the championship trophy. Since its establishment in the 1960s, the Hwa Chong Track and Field Team has attained many achievements. We were the first school to win all 4 divisions in 2017, a feat which was repeated in 2019, showcasing our long-standing dominance in the sport.

Cheers reverberated throughout the stadium, as the student council led the whole school in many iconic cheers, such as “We will rock you” and “North South East West”, providing much needed support for our athletes on this special day. Cheers echoed throughout the stadium, and the ground trembled as the whole cohort participated in this show of support and power.
In the A-girls 100m sprint, the whole school erupted in cheers when Rachel Soh managed to secure third-place, clocking in at 12.36. Her teammate, Megan Anne Ying, also managed to secure fifth-place with a timing of 12.52. Additionally, Clara Lim from Raffles Institution rewrote her own national record of 12.21s set last year by clocking in a blazing 12.12.
The whole school watched with bated breaths, as the B-boys 100m sprint commenced. Jonathan Philip Hoare from HCI, stormed to a commanding victory, clocking an exceptional 10.94s. The whole school once again erupted in cheers, as he attained the gold medal he had been vying for. Despite a slow start, he managed to keep his composure in front of the hundreds of spectators, making up for it in his final stretch to edge out second place Keane Tan from ACS(I) by 0.05s. “I thought I was gone from there, but I just remained calm and did what I knew I could do because if I tense up, I run a lot slower,” Jonathan said in a post-race interview with Straits Times. His teammate, Fu Zixuan, took fourth place with a timing of 11.40s.
In the B-boys 1500m race, Liu Haoyue from HCI obtained 6th place with a time of 04:21.85, and Oliver Fiore from Admiralty Secondary School clinched gold with a timing of 04:09.03, shattering the previous national record by 3.58s.
In the A-girls 1500m race, Emma Su from HCI clinched silver with a timing of 05:04.41, and her teammate Cheryl Tan got eleventh with a timing of 05:31.83.
Elsewhere, in the A-girls 4x100m relay, Hwa Chong Institution’s team exceeded all expectations as they surged ahead and clocked a blistering 0:48.18, setting a new national record in front of the whole school. They kept their lead throughout the entire race, staying well ahead of all other runners. HCI’s anchor, Rachel Soh, said in an interview with Straits Times that “Prior to NSG, we were just aiming to have a smooth execution. But after the heats, we were hopeful of breaking the record.”

Storming to first place, Hwa Chong's A-division girls clocked 04:08.68 in the A-girls 4x400m relay, completely annihilating the competition, with VJC’s team coming in nearly 2 seconds after.
In the C-boys 4x400m relay, HCI managed to attain fourth with a timing of 03:59.57, while the B-boys team managed to clinch bronze with a time of 03:32.84, after a close fight with Singapore Sports School.
Furthermore, in the B-boys high jump, Kaai Chan from HCI clinched gold with a final height of 1.85m, narrowly edging out VS’s Jonah Jude Seah. His teammate Soh Shao Ming came in third with a final height of 1.83m, putting two HCI athletes on the podium.
At the end of this 4 hour long event, HCI came out on top for C-boys, B-boys and A-girls, making us the overall champion of this season.
Congratulations to all our athletes who have persevered through all the gruelling training sessions, and we are proud of your achievements regardless of the result!
