The campaign season for election to the 53rd Hwa Chong Students’ Council was recently concluded. After a preliminary round of interviews, student candidates grouped themselves into campaign groups of 3 to 4 candidates based on their faculties to conduct their campaigns.

A key feature of the campaign season was the use of social media by some candidates. Some groups created an Instagram account, where they introduced their members and shared their motivations for running. These posts offered a glimpse into candidates’ values, leadership styles and aspirations for Hwa Chong. From heartfelt reflections on school experiences to creative visuals, candidates demonstrated both sincerity and ingenuity in connecting with the student body.

The campaign period also transformed the school environment into a lively space. Posters and other campaign materials were seen across the campus, each reflecting the unique identity of the respective groups. In the inner plaza, leaflets introducing every group were displayed on whiteboards for students to view in their free time.

On polling day, 15 April, candidates were split into their faculties to participate in a pitching session. They were required to give a self introduction before responding to scenario-based questions and fun questions. During self introductions, candidates elaborated on their aspirations of serving in the Students’ Council and passionately promoted their candidacy to their audience. Afterwards, candidates randomly picked 1 out of 45 scenario questions to respond in a short span of time. This allowed audiences to quickly assess their potential as Councillors and their crisis-management skills. The fun questions showcased the unique personalities and communication skills of the candidates. Examples of fun questions were, “Why does your nose run but your foot smell?” and “Describe yourself as an element of the periodic table”. After the pitching session, the students could vote for their preferred councillors in their own faculty.

The results of the election were announced at 6pm on the same day.
