On 20 Feb 2026, the school welcomed members of a local band, Goose 我鸟, to Hwa Chong Institution for a special songwriting workshop organised by HCWeyoung, Hwa Chong College's songwriting band. The session was open to students from Sec 1 to Junior College Year 2 across Hwa Chong Institution and Nanyang Girls High School, bringing together budding musicians and music enthusiasts for an afternoon of learning and inspiration.

The workshop aimed to equip students with foundational songwriting skills while offering a broader understanding of Singapore’s evolving music landscape. In their presentation, a member of Goose 我鸟 shared his own experience as a music teacher and artist in Singapore, as well as candid insights into the current state of music in Singapore, discussing how the local scene has grown in recent years and how digital platforms have created new opportunities for independent artists. They also highlighted the realities of sustaining a music career in a small but vibrant industry, encouraging students to remain adaptable and proactive.
Beyond industry perspectives, the band provided practical guidance on how aspiring musicians can take their first steps. From experimenting with simple chord progressions to refining lyrical themes and developing a distinct artistic identity, students were introduced to approachable methods of beginning their songwriting journey. The speakers emphasised that meaningful songs often stem from personal experiences, honest reflection, and a willingness to revise and improve one’s work.

The session was interactive and engaging, with students actively participating and posing thoughtful questions about creative processes, collaboration, and balancing artistic passion with practical considerations. The workshop proved to be an enriching experience for all who attended, including many students who like to explore and express themselves through music.
