At Hwa Chong, Sabbatical Week gives students opportunities to learn beyond the classroom through experiences that broaden their perspectives and nurture personal growth. The 心想狮城 sabbatical invited students to rediscover Singapore through visits to different local places of interest, while reflecting on well-being, friendship, and their connection to the country they call home.

One of the biggest takeaways from this sabbatical was the importance of maintaining a healthy work-life balance. In the midst of a busy and stressful Term 2, Sabbatical Week in Week 9 gave me an opportunity to slow down, relax, and recharge. Through activities such as cycling, visiting Jewel Changi Airport, going to a trampoline park, and playing sports at Sentosa Beach, I was reminded that taking breaks is just as important as working hard. Spending time with friends and enjoying these experiences helped me return feeling refreshed and motivated.

Another valuable learning point was learning to appreciate Singapore’s landscape and explore parts of the country that I would not normally visit. Since our activities were spread across different locations, we had the chance to experience the diversity of Singapore. While cycling, I not only exercised and maintained a healthy lifestyle, but also had the opportunity to appreciate the scenery around me. From the modern cityscape of Marina Bay to the greenery of parks and beaches, I gained a greater appreciation for how Singapore balances urban development with nature.

Finally, this sabbatical allowed me to make new friends and step out of my comfort zone. The first few days were slightly awkward as many of the participants were unfamiliar to me. However, as we spent more time together through the various activities, we gradually became more comfortable with one another. We started having lunch together after each session, and by the end of the week, we had formed meaningful friendships. I am grateful that this sabbatical not only allowed me to relax and explore Singapore, but also gave me the opportunity to connect with new people and create lasting memories.
